GE Browning: Technology Drives Energy Development

China Industrial News China General Electric Energy Group, headquartered in Beijing, China, has 11 joint ventures or wholly-owned enterprises in China, and has branches in several cities in China. The total number of employees is approximately 4,200. Up to now, General Electric Energy Group has provided a series of green solutions for China's traditional energy and wind energy, biogas and other renewable energy companies, and has provided nearly one thousand fans to the Chinese market. Recently, General Electric Energy Group and Harbin Electric Co., Ltd. signed a memorandum of understanding on cooperation, using GE's newly launched combined cycle power generation technology to jointly promote high-efficiency, flexible operation of the gas power plant as a whole solution. This reporter interviewed Paul Browning, president of GE Thermal Power.

Reporter: In 2003, General Electric Energy Group started cooperation with Harbin Electric to provide gas engines for the Chinese market. What is included in this new memorandum of understanding with Harbin Electric?

Browning: General Electric Energy Group is a global leader in power generation and energy technology. With 85,000 employees worldwide, the business covers power generation and water treatment, energy services, oil and gas and other business sectors, providing products and services that involve all The energy sector includes coal, oil, natural gas, and nuclear power. It also includes renewable energy sources such as wind power, biogas, solar energy, and water, as well as other new fuels. As the world's largest wind power market, China is planning to expand its natural gas power generation business. In 2010, General Electric and Harbin Electric established a joint venture in wind energy. We have been providing partners with the latest innovations. The memorandum of understanding signed this time includes the purchase of four 9FB gas turbines, of which two have been integrated. The latest FlexEfficiency technology will be used in Harbin Electric's upcoming project.

Reporter: How does GE research and develop new combined cycle power generation technology? How much money is invested? Where is the innovation of this technology reflected?

Browning: In order to meet the increasing demand for flexibility in the global energy industry, power generation companies are increasingly demanding the operational flexibility of power plants. GE invests more than US$500 million in global research and development of new technologies that can meet this demand. The innovative nature of our latest combined cycle power generation technology is reflected in the combination of the flexibility and high efficiency of gas turbine operation. This breakthrough new technology is the result of the constant pursuit of clean, high-efficiency energy. By realizing rapid start-stop of the gas turbine, it is possible to react quickly to load fluctuations generated by wind and solar power stations. This innovative technology will help renewable energy to be more compatible with the grid. We are seeking cooperation in the world and strive to bring this new technology to the global market.

Reporter: How does GE's latest combined cycle power generation technology improve gas turbine energy efficiency and achieve energy efficiency?

Browning: Compared with 9FA currently in use, the biggest change in 9FB gas turbines using the new combined cycle power generation technology is the greater investment and use of aviation technology. People in the industry know that, sometimes, gas turbines are changing their load every day, which is similar to the state of aircraft engines. This technique is often used when the airplane is airborne or descending. General Electric Energy Group's development of gas turbines draws on advanced experience in aerodynamics, heat transfer technology, cooling and sealing technology, and materials technology, and fully integrates them into modular control systems. Our latest gas turbine 9FB gas turbine technology provided to Harbin Electric can meet customers' requirements for flexible peaking operation, not only meeting the conventional power supply requirements, but also meeting the requirements of cogeneration. Our test and calculation results show that compared with the existing technology, products using combined cycle power generation technology can save 6.4 million cubic meters of natural gas per year, equivalent to an annual savings of 15 million yuan.

Reporter: Why does the combined cycle power generation technology make renewable energy more compatible with the grid and save more natural gas and renewable energy?

Browning: General Electric Energy Group has set up a special test center in the United States. Before the 9FB gas turbine was fired for the first time, it carried out a full load test at the verification site. This is a test site that uses a dual fuel-less power grid to provide partial load, frequency fluctuation, and verification of transient performance. The conclusion drawn from the data is that since combined cycle power generation technology can help renewable energy to be more compatible with the power grid, it can save more natural gas and renewable energy, and increase its share of renewable energy in the power grid. The new 9FB gas turbine, thanks to the combined cycle power generation technology, has improved gas turbine efficiency by several percentage points. Its high efficiency and flexibility means that it can be more efficient at startup and load reduction, and can use more renewable energy. We also need to see whether the start-up time of the gas engine is related to the efficiency of the entire power plant. If we can reduce the entire gas turbine start-up time, we can also save energy. In addition, this gas engine can also be operated with part of the load to reduce fuel consumption. Therefore, using this technology, it is possible to achieve high performance even under partial load operation.
