Freescale Introduces Scalable Flexis AC Microcontroller Family

Electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) and electromagnetic interference (EMI) are major concerns for developers designing in "noisy" environments, covering many electrical components that are close to sensing. To address this design challenge, Freescale has introduced a family of scalable microcontrollers (MCUs) to help engineers reduce noise in large and industrial applications.

Freescale's semi-Flexis AC family features 8-bit devices (MC9S08AC128/96/60/48/32) and 32-bit V1ColdFireMCUs (MCF51AC256/128) designed to deliver outstanding EMC/EMI performance and a variety of on-chip peripherals to help reduce The number of components reduces system complexity and total system cost. As the third member of Freescale's Flexis family of 8- to 32-pin, peripheral and software-compatible MCU families, the AC Series offers an upward migration path from the existing Freescale 8-bit MC9S08AW.

To help achieve basic to advanced motor control, the FlexisAC device features a three-time/pulse width modulator (TPM) on an 8-bit S08AC128/96 device and an advanced 16-bit FlexTimer module on a 32-bit MCF51AC256/128 ColdFireMCU. Control of complex solutions.

The ColdFire V1 device provides performance and peripherals to handle advanced motor control algorithms while relying on Freescale's proximity sensing software to drive the touch screen user interface. Freescale offers a comprehensive support and training ecosystem of development tools, reference designs, application notes, software examples and webcasts. To help developers get their boards up and running faster, Freescale introduced DEMOACKIT, a flexible, cost-effective evaluation system for the FlexisAC family. DEMOACKIT includes 8-bit and 32-bit Flexis AC daughter cards with built-in USBBDM, serial interface, acceleration and I/O headers.

Freescale also introduced the DEMOACEX expansion board, which plugs into DEMOACKIT, allowing developers to take advantage of other performance and integration features, such as CAN from 32-bit solutions.

The Flexis AC MCU is supported by a complimentary version of CodeWarrior Dev el opmentStudio for the 6.1 version of the microcontroller, which supports software development for Freescale's 8-bit or 32-bit MCUs. Designers can further accelerate application development with the award-winning rapid application development tool ProcessorExpert tool in the CodeWarrior tool suite.

Samples of FlexisAC devices are available now. The suggested retail price (USD) for every 10,000 S08AC128 and MCF51AC25 starts at $2.48 and $3.54. The suggested retail prices for the DEMOACKIT and DEMOACEX kits are $99 and $30, respectively.
