NXP: Accelerating the layout of China's LED lighting IC market

As the penetration rate of the LED lighting market continues to increase, NXP will adopt a more aggressive strategy for the development of the Chinese LED lighting market in the future. According to Zhang Weichao, according to market data survey, 80% of global LED lighting products are developed in China, and more and more foreign LED driver companies have also placed their production lines in China.

Zhang Weichao said that although NXP has many kinds of LED driver chip solutions, but NXP is also committed to providing total lighting solutions, including CFL drivers, Ballast drivers and HID drivers, as well as Jennet-IP wireless dimming solutions with integrated RF transceivers and 32-bit MCUs. In the past, as part of Philips, NXP has a mature experience in lighting industry applications. Zhang Weichao said that there are many domestic manufacturers who have entered the LED lighting industry. They have not established enough experience in lighting applications/optics/heat dissipation, and many driver IC manufacturers have similar situations. Therefore, many solutions are not mature enough. NXP can effectively integrate its lighting driver ICs and lighting application technologies accumulated over the years to provide extensive technical support to domestic lighting customers and promote the healthy development of this industry.


According to various aspects, the overall solution of NXP Lighting has been recognized by major international manufacturers such as Philips, GE, Osram, Mangamei, etc., and has been widely used in many commercial and civil indoors at home and abroad.

Zhang Weichao said that its thyristor dimming driver IC SSL2101 has been successfully researched and developed many years ago. It was officially mass-produced in 2009 and sold tens of millions of pieces each year. According to this IC, a large number of reference design boards and developments have been developed. The design information has a good response in the market. The SSL2102 and SSL2103 of the same platform enhance the design flexibility and power support range of the product, and better meet the different requirements of customers for product differentiation and performance.

Next, NXP will launch a series of non-dimming solutions (here referred to as non-triac dimming). Zhang Weichao said that the future of the larger lighting market in the country lies in the high efficiency and compact high-power LED bulbs. NXP will successfully promote the SSL21151/3 and SSL21101 solutions to this LED lighting field.

The new SSL21151 and SSL21153 are ideal for isolated topologies for non-dimmable 5 W and 10 W LED luminaires, providing good current control for flyback configurations. The SSL2115x can be used for small, compact LEDs that use primary side sensing circuitry to regulate current while integrating an LED open/short protection circuit (with built-in 700V MOSFET) and circuitry that can be directly activated from rectified mains. The SSL2115x series adds a valley fill circuit with a power factor of approximately 0.9.

Featuring intelligent digital control, the SSL21101 is a single-stage solution designed to drive LED devices in flyback or buck-boost configurations while achieving extremely high efficiency – up to 90% depending on the application. High-precision control of the output current. In the SSL21101, the intelligent digital control function has two modes that are specifically optimized for specific regional regulatory requirements. In high power factor mode, the PF rating is above 0.95 and the total harmonic distortion (THD) is limited to less than 20%. The low ripple mode reduces the LED current ripple to less than 1%, allowing the use of smaller electrolytic capacitors for extremely compact designs.

The SSL21101 features high integration, feature-rich, and small form factor. It features a high-voltage power switch and a circuit that allows direct startup with the rectified mains voltage, along with full protection. With the SSL21101, the final application requires only 18 components, which greatly simplifies the bill of materials – in the case of mass production, the cost of a complete system eBOM that does not include LEDs is less than $1.30.

The DALI and DMX512 wired lighting control solutions are NXP's first DALI and DMX512 wired lighting control systems based on the low cost, low power 32-bit ARM Cortex-M0 processor. The system uses the NXP LPC1100XL family of microcontrollers to address the communication requirements of intelligent lighting projects using DALI and DMX, bringing rich functionality to commercial, architectural and entertainment lighting applications in wired networks. NXP introduced the Cortex-M0 to the lighting control system using DALI and DMX512, allowing lighting designers to easily upgrade 8-bit microprocessors without increasing costs. The latest DALI and DMX512 systems demonstrate the ability of 32-bit microcontrollers to support an increasing number of complex lighting network nodes and deliver significant value without increasing costs. From wired lighting and control networks using DALI, DMX and KNX to wireless solutions using JenNet-IP and ZigBee, NXP offers a complete range of energy-saving solutions for smart lighting networks in home, building and outdoor settings.
