In the STEP 7 program, addresses such as I/O signals, bit memory, counters, timers, data blocks and function blocks are used. These addresses are fully accessible in the program, but if you use address symbols, the program will be easier to read (for example, Motor_A_On or other symbols that conform to the company or industry code system). This symbol can then be used to access the address in the user program.

Absolute address

Absolute addresses contain address identifiers and memory locations (for example, Q 4.0, I 1.1, M 2.0, FB21).

Symbolic address

Assigning a symbolic name to an absolute address makes the program more readable and simplifies troubleshooting.

STEP 7 can automatically translate the symbolic name to the desired absolute address. If you prefer to access ARRAY, STRUCT, data blocks, local data, logic blocks, and user-defined data types using symbolic names, you must first assign the symbolic name to the absolute address before using the symbolic addressing data.

For example, you can assign the symbol name MOTOR_ON to address Q 4.0 and then use MOTOR_ON as an address in the program statement. Using symbolic addresses makes it easier to identify how well the elements in the program match the components of the process control project.
