Analyzed the advantages and disadvantages of each mainstream codec and gave advice on the choice of codec

In the first month of 2018, the video codec landscape was anything but quiet. Major players were making waves, signaling a shift in the industry’s long-standing norms. Apple joined the AOM Alliance to support AV1, while China's AVS2 announced it would go open source. Meanwhile, Leonardo Chiariglione, founder and chairman of MPEG, made a bold statement: “The MPEG business model has broken down.” Although AV1 and AVS2 may take time to mature, they offer users more choices than ever before. Fu Deliang, a senior R&D manager at Hulu, provided an in-depth analysis of the advantages and disadvantages of major codecs and offered his recommendations for codec selection. As the video industry continues to evolve, the need for efficient, open, and widely supported codecs becomes increasingly critical. Time flies, and we’ve now reached 2018. Over the past few years, the online video industry has experienced rapid growth, driven by the internet. Video has become a powerful medium for global communication, enabling people around the world to access high-density information with ease. However, what many didn’t anticipate was the ongoing confusion surrounding the “power transfer” in video codec standards—the backbone of the entire online video industry. H.264, which turned 15 in 2018, remains dominant, but its successor, HEVC, has been available for five years without clear dominance. The industry is in urgent need of next-generation codecs that can improve compression efficiency, yet no single standard has emerged as the clear winner. H.264, also known as AVC, is arguably the most successful video codec in history. It has been adopted across a wide range of applications, from streaming services to mobile devices. Its widespread support on both encoder and decoder sides has allowed companies to focus on their core businesses without worrying about compatibility issues. HEVC, the official successor to H.264, was developed with the goal of replacing it. While technically advanced, its complex patent licensing system has created obstacles. High licensing fees have slowed its adoption, despite its strong performance and industry influence. VP9, developed by Google after acquiring the VP series, has gained traction as a free and open alternative. It is used by YouTube and Netflix, among others, and enjoys good browser and Android support. However, it lacks the robust encoder ecosystem and hardware decoding support needed for broader adoption. AV1, backed by the AOM Alliance, represents a new wave of open-source video codecs. With support from major tech companies like Google, Microsoft, and Apple, AV1 aims to provide a free and open alternative to HEVC. While still in development, it shows promise and could significantly impact the industry if widely adopted. Other standards like H.266/FVC and AVS2 are also emerging, each with unique strengths. Choosing the right codec involves evaluating factors such as decoder support, encoder maturity, feature support, and business needs. For streaming companies, the decision isn't just about technology—it's about strategy. Factors like platform compatibility, cost, and future scalability play a crucial role. A flexible architecture that allows for multiple codecs and encoders can help companies adapt to the evolving landscape. As the video coding era enters a period of competition and uncertainty, the path forward requires careful consideration. Whether HEVC holds on, AV1 rises, or new standards emerge, the future of video coding will be shaped by innovation, collaboration, and user demand. The journey ahead promises to be exciting, challenging, and full of opportunity.
