Molex/Microchip jointly develops automotive USB media modules and USB power output solutions

Molex and Microchip are collaborating to create advanced USB media modules and power output solutions tailored for automotive infotainment systems. At the 2018 International Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, Nevada, Molex showcased these cutting-edge technologies aimed at enhancing connectivity in modern vehicles.

Dave Atkinson, Director of Business Development for Molex’s Interoperable Mobile Solutions, noted that today’s vehicles increasingly feature multiple charging ports and power connectors to meet the rising demand for mobile device integration. Molex's integrated automotive solutions offer customers greater design flexibility, enabling them to customize infotainment systems and USB power outputs across a wide range of vehicle models.

During CES 2018, Molex presented its USB media module and power output solution, demonstrating how it works with Microchip’s technology to deliver a balanced USB A power output system. This innovation also supports driver assistance features on mobile devices, allowing seamless interaction between the vehicle’s head unit and apps like navigation, music, voice messaging, and hands-free calling.

Microchip’s USB devices enhance power output functionality while enabling a streamlined system architecture that can be integrated into a single module. This approach helps reduce the overall bill of materials (BOM) cost. The automotive smart hub chip is central to this system, connecting multiple mobile devices to the car’s infotainment system while simultaneously charging them. By integrating these technologies, Molex and Microchip are paving the way for smarter, more connected driving experiences.

As the automotive industry continues to evolve, the collaboration between Molex and Microchip highlights the importance of seamless integration between hardware and software. These solutions not only improve user convenience but also support the growing need for safe and efficient in-vehicle connectivity. With continued innovation, we can expect even more advanced features that enhance both comfort and safety for drivers and passengers alike.

USB 3.0 Cable

USB 3.0 is the future and the new generation in transmission tech, with the following advantages: Super speed – It`s 10 times faster than its predecessor and backward compatible with all USB 2.0 interfaces. It uses a 9-pin connector with 4 pins compatible with USB 2.0 and another 5 pins for bi-directional data transfer.

External Differences

The USB 3.0 connector is blue.
The top 5 pins provide the two-way data transfer.
The bottom 4 pins provide backward compatibility with USB 2.0.
Note: All USB 3.0 Interfaces are blue
