Overview
The MAX8622 flyback switching regulator quickly and efficiently charges high-voltage camera flash capacitors. It is ideal for digital, film, cellular, and smart phone cameras, which are typically powered by two alkaline/NiMH batteries or a single Li+ battery. Built-in low on-resistance n-channel MOSFETs reduce switching power consumption and increase efficiency.
The current limit, continuous mode, and transformer switch architecture quickly charge the output capacitor. Cycle-by-cycle peak current limiting technology eliminates inrush current. The current limit value can be set to control the maximum load of the battery. In addition, the input voltage monitoring loop reduces battery life as the battery approaches a fully discharged state, extending battery life. It also allows the current limit value under normal operating conditions to be set to use a faster charge rate than the charge rate when the battery is near full discharge.
The open drain/DONE output is used to indicate that the camera flash capacitor is fully charged. The MAX8622 automatically replenishes the output capacitor every 11s to maintain the capacitance and minimize battery drain.
The MAX8622 uses an external resistor divider to monitor the output voltage for high output voltage accuracy. Direct detection of the secondary side voltage of the transformer prevents the output capacitor from being discharged through the feedback resistor, while direct output detection provides the most accurate voltage accuracy regardless of the transformer turns ratio. The MAX8622 is available in a 3mm x 3mm, 10-pin TDFN package.
