On January 1st, British media reported that Norway has begun installing inductive street lights on certain roads across the country. These smart lighting systems are designed to automatically adjust their brightness based on the presence of vehicles, cyclists, or pedestrians, helping to save energy and lower carbon emissions.
The new inductive LED street lights were recently installed along a 5-mile (8 km) stretch of road near Hole in the outskirts of Oslo. These advanced lights dim by 20% when no one is around, and instantly brighten to full power when a vehicle, bicycle, or pedestrian is detected by the built-in radar sensors. This intelligent system ensures that energy is only used when necessary, significantly reducing overall consumption.
According to local reports, the installation of these smart street lights saves approximately 2,100 kWh per week. In addition to being more energy-efficient, LED technology also contributes to lower greenhouse gas emissions compared to traditional lighting systems. This makes the project an important step toward Norway’s broader environmental goals.
Beyond just upgrading its street lighting, Norway is taking a comprehensive approach to sustainability. The country continues to invest in renewable energy, green transportation, and eco-friendly infrastructure as part of its commitment to combating climate change and promoting a cleaner future.
