Silicon Labs Introduces New Optical Biometric Sensor Si117x

Silicon Labs, known for its core technology innovations, has launched a new line of optical biometric sensors that deliver advanced heart rate monitoring (HRM) and electrocardiogram (ECG) capabilities. These sensors are ideal for wearable fitness and health devices, offering ultra-low power consumption, high sensitivity, and excellent integration. The Si117x sensor module is particularly well-suited for smartwatches, wristbands, patch-type devices, and other wearables that demand long Battery life and precise arrhythmia detection. To help developers accelerate their product development and reduce time to market, Silicon Labs provides a complete sensing solution. This includes the Si117x sensor module, an optimized heart rhythm algorithm, a Bluetooth-enabled Wireless Gecko SoC, and comprehensive development tools like sample code, project examples, and a user-friendly wrist development kit. Everything is designed to make it easier to integrate advanced biometric features into wearable designs. The Si117x enhances rhythm measurement accuracy, delivering a better user experience. It features fast sampling rates, a high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR > 100dB), and advanced noise cancellation that filters out ambient interference and erroneous data. Even with varying skin tones, physiological differences, or tattoos, the sensor consistently produces high-quality signals, making heart rate tracking more reliable and accurate. Additionally, the ECG waveform from the Si117x offers more than just heart rhythm monitoring. It enables features like heart rate variability (HRV) analysis, stress assessment, and pulse volume measurement, opening up new possibilities in biometric applications. By combining ECG with optical HRM, developers can unlock new insights into user health and wellness. The Si117x integrates seamlessly with Silicon Labs’ motion-compensated rhythm algorithm, which is specifically optimized for wrist-based measurements. It runs efficiently on EFM32 Gecko MCUs and EFR32 Wireless Gecko SoCs that support Bluetooth Low Energy. This integration allows for system-level power and performance optimization, reducing the effort required to add heart rate monitoring to wearable products. In terms of availability, the Si117x sensor modules are now in mass production and come in a compact 3.7mm x 7mm 28-pin LGA package. Silicon Labs also offers the Si118x optical biometric sensor chip with an integrated photodiode in a transparent 3mm x 3mm QFN package. To support development and testing, the company provides various wrist ECG and PPG development kits, a Bluetooth-enabled rhythm watch, and the Triple Heart app for Android, which allows users to collect and analyze data from multiple devices.
