Philips: 3D has abandoned OLED is the future

Philips is very interested in OLED TVs, and their TV business owner Danny Tack commented on today's TV industry: "3D has not been saved, neither can bring any novel experience, nor attract consumers. Now the best seller is 4K TV, but the future is still OLED."

This is indeed a big truth, 3D features have become an additional selling point for high-end TV, although TV manufacturers will never clarify this in front of you. In the past, manufacturers have tried hard to instill the concept that 3D TV is better than ordinary TV, but now look at their product line, 3D has already talked about the front line of promotion, you can only see them on some high-end products. .

Then talk about the competition between 4K and OLED, in fact, these two are not contradictory. But LCD manufacturers are always painstaking to tell you that 4K LCD is better than OLED in current technology. Regardless of the pros and cons of the two, if you look far, you will understand the general direction of the market. Danny Tack's words are crucial: "If it was a year ago, you would find that OLED TVs are more expensive than high-end 4K LCD TVs. Nearly three times. But now, the price of OLED is falling, and will eventually occupy the market. Because the inherent characteristics of OLED is better than liquid crystal, especially its black level and contrast. Although there are many problems with OLED, if now If we don't lay out OLEDs, we will be left behind by other competitors after a year or two."

I have to say that Philips is awake, although we are doubtful about whether Philips currently has the ability to produce OLED TVs. After all, Philips has divested its consumer electronics business and handed it over to other companies. The most critical technology for OLEDs is the panel, which is currently only available from LG.

In this regard, Danny Tack did not shy away from saying: "If we are going to do OLED TV, the panel is of course using LG. This is no secret. All OLED TVs on the market are provided by LG. But we will Based on the LG panel, plus your own image processing technology to get better results. As for the price will be the same as LG's products, it is obviously stupid to play the price war."

In addition to LG, another TV giant Panasonic also released its own OLED TV CZ950 at IFA2015 last year. It also uses LG's panel, but the circuit part is designed by Panasonic itself, which unexpectedly attracted LG technicians to watch at the show.

Panasonic's follow-up may drive the enthusiasm of other manufacturers. Buying an OLED panel from a competitor LG is not a shameful thing, as long as it surpasses the opponent in other designs. LG is unlikely to be unwilling to offer OLED technology to more friends because it will help expand the OLED camp. The establishment of technical barriers is not conducive to the development of OLED.

Philips did not disclose the timing of the launch of OLED TV, but Danny Tack's position has been so obvious that it is very likely during the year.

Look at the attitudes of other TV manufacturers. Chinese manufacturers have already made it clear that they want to develop the OLED market, because this is an opportunity to achieve a corner overtaking. Not long ago, Sony's staff revealed to Love Live that Sony will launch OLED products at the right time.

Samsung is still uncertain about whether to purchase OLED panels from LG. At present, they are making every effort to increase the production capacity of small and medium-sized OLED panels, and may not be able to invest large amounts of money in large-size OLED panels. It is obviously faster to buy a panel directly from LG, but Samsung does not want to be subject to LG in key technologies, and is more inclined to develop higher quality OLED panels. According to South Korean media, Samsung will make a decision in May to launch OLED TV products by 2018.

Today's most eye-catching LG has planned to increase the annual production capacity of OLED TV panels to more than 1 million units this year and invest $9 billion in funds to expand production lines. It seems that the situation is already clear.
