Taiwan's new standard setting applies to the minimum efficiency of LED lighting

The Ministry of Economic Affairs of Taiwan (MOEA) has announced new standards that require all indoor warm white LED lamps to have a minimum efficacy of 70 lumens/Watt, while cold white LEDs must be more efficient to reach a minimum of 75 lumens/W. According to the report of the Bureau of Energy and Economics of Taiwan (BOE), lighting power consumption accounted for 10.9% of the total power consumption in 2013, and residential lighting accounted for 40% of the total lighting power consumption.

The Global Lighting Association (GLA) welcomed this move, and GLA represented Michael Ng that the minimum efficiency requirement should be set at such a level that high-quality products can be widely used at an affordable price. Michael Ng said: "From the GLA's standpoint, we support the global lighting products to develop the lowest level of performance, Taiwan's Ministry of Economic Affairs is a good example of this initiative." Michael Ng is also Taiwan's director of international affairs of lighting fixture export industry director. He added that at the same time, there must be adequate supervision and penalties in place to ensure that suppliers are honest and reliable, and the standards used are internationally uniform. ”

When the reporter interviewed Iain Mcrae, director of global lighting applications at Thorn Lighting, about this standard, he said: “This is an interesting change in the situation. This is obviously discouraging the use of high color temperatures, perhaps to encourage retailers or manufacturers to adopt easier compliance. The warmer light of the standard." I wonder if this will have a knock-on effect.
