Zhao Zhixiong, who specializes in catering space and urban transformation design at Sizhe Design Co., is currently carrying out the lighting renovation on the banks of the Pearl River in Liwan District of Guangzhou and the renovation of the main roads in Liwan District, and has been widely praised by Guangzhou Municipal Government. As an interior designer, what kind of insights does Zhao Zhixiong have on lighting design? What kind of tricks did he take to renovate the lights on both sides of the Pearl River and received critical acclaim? With these questions, Aladdin Lighting Network approached Sizhe. Interpret the lighting world of this interior designer.
Talking about the lighting design in my eyes
Do you think that current lighting has received sufficient attention in interior design?
The emphasis is positive. However, the design will also encounter some owners who think that the lighting is over, their bias in lighting perception sometimes causes some of our good ideas to be unapplied. Of course, the owner is going to start from reality, which is hard to change.
In your opinion, who is decorating the interior design and lighting design?
I think the design process should be like this: first understand the analysis of customer requirements and positioning, and then design a flat layout and creative ideas, then the application of materials and color comparison, and then what kind of space needs to go Lighting, what kind of lighting, this is not a question of who is decorating who has chickens or eggs first, but a necessary procedure that I think. Light must be subject to space, and space is subject to customer requirements, which is indisputable.
Of course, there are also some special projects, such as nightclubs and other entertainment venues, which may need to put forward some important lighting opinions on the premise, but most of the space procedures are still like I said.
What is the current lighting design in the country?
I think there is still a certain misunderstanding in building lighting in China. Perhaps it is related to government regulation and social cognition. Our current lighting should be somewhat ubiquitous. It should be said that proper architectural lighting is still necessary, but if you catch a building, you need to brighten it, then it is not necessary. The lighting of many buildings and landscapes that we are doing now is somewhat superficial, and too much attention is paid to external things. Like when I was doing the Pearl River, many warehouses were actually very worn out, but they must also be illuminated as required. But in Hong Kong and European countries, a lot of lighting will be simpler. Many buildings in China believe that floodlighting is needed, but in Hong Kong or abroad, there is no need to add some lights to illuminate it, but just use some street lights to quietly create the atmosphere, in fact, that is also very good. I think this should be a phenomenon at some stage of lighting development. Maybe one day our cognition will change and the lighting design of the city will change accordingly.
Have you been to many cities in China, and where do you enjoy the night scenes?
Shanghai. Shanghai is actually divided into two types. One is the road sign like the Bund. It is very brilliant and represents the characteristics of the city. The other is also very good, such as Xintiandi. The highlight is that their lights are not abused, but the bright places are bright, such as shop signs, but the streets are not as bright and bright as other cities, and they are very atmospheric.
In fact, it is not only the illumination is the design, the dark is also a design. The darkness can set off the atmosphere and also create the desired effect.
Zhao Zhixiong accepted an interview with Chen Tan, a reporter from Aladdin Lighting Network
Said the design experience of the Pearl River night scene
You have recently received a lot of praises and rewards for the landscape lighting on both sides of the Pearl River. Can you introduce this project to us?
The transformation of this project is to meet the needs of the urban night lighting of the 2010 Asian Games. Not only on both sides of the Pearl River, the entire city is or will be undergoing an overall bright project. Specifically, select some valuable buildings and do some bright treatment according to the guidance of the government. The renovation of the Liwan District I have done is also part of this large bright project.
What is the biggest problem encountered when doing this project?
First, there are some buildings that have their own characteristics. From the design point of view, they should not be illuminated. However, in order to cooperate with this overall lighting project, it is necessary to do some bright processing. This is more helpless.
Second, the problem of installation and maintenance of the lamp. The lights need to be installed on the building. This will not cause any problems in the public buildings, but in the residential areas, it will be opposed or not coordinated by many residents, which forces us to adjust and compromise. In addition, the maintenance of the lamp is also a cumbersome thing, so most of the time we can only do some design on the roof of the building, and many techniques and methods are not fully utilized.
The night view of each city must be in line with the culture of the city. How do you build this design on the urban characteristics of Guangzhou when you are doing the Pearl River landscape lighting?
The current urban culture is actually similar, so the specific characteristics of Guangzhou are not so obvious. But we still made some distinctions. For example, in some ancient and old buildings, we will use floodlighting to perfectly outline the shape of the building. Because some buildings are public buildings and uninhabited at night, the space left for us to design is relatively large. We can use the lights to make them more three-dimensional and beautiful. Like restrictive residential buildings or buildings and new buildings that are not unique in their own right, we will use some dynamic lights to brighten. We are more about distinguishing the characteristics of ancient and modern architecture.
Which lights are mainly used?
Mainly used floodlights, spotlights, LEDs, etc.
LEDs are mainly used on the hooks of buildings. From the perspective of energy saving, I feel that LED is indeed a very good product. The LEDs create a dynamic or point-like or linear performance that is suitable for use in the exterior of the building.
How many points does this project give to myself?
Sixty-seven, seventy, not deliberately modest, I am really not too satisfied. This is mainly due to some objective factors, our recommendations have not been fully adopted, and some helpless.
What do you think is the significance of the success of the lighting renovation project on both sides of the Pearl River?
The meaning is of course, but it is not personal to me. In the short term, I think this is an aid to the city. You can definitely see the night in Guangzhou is more beautiful. But in the long run, I think it should be a process of progress and reflection. During the construction process and after the completion of the work, we will not go into the misunderstanding of wherever we are going.
Reporter's notes:
In the interview, Zhao Zhixiong told us that in his mind, a good designer should have knowledge, insight, analysis, lust and true color. Among them, erotic is the thing that likes to observe things and likes to feel all the beauty. Because the endings of the five words are the same in Cantonese, Zhao Zhixiong attributed it to five colors. In our opinion, a person who can make the interior design alive and well, and can make the lighting design beautiful, has undoubtedly become a qualified five-color designer.
