African power experts summarize experience in power reform

International Energy Newsletter: The International Power Seminar was held in Yaoundé, the capital of Cameroon. Experts of the participating countries exchanged views on the experiences of power reforms in various countries. Experts from Cameroon, Morocco, and South Africa introduced their achievements in power reform.

Since the 1990s, Africa has been committed to improving electricity shortages, strengthening power reforms, and conducting a series of reforms ranging from power generation to electricity distribution to charging. Cameroon has implemented a policy of privatization of electricity since 1998. In 2005, private power operators were introduced to attract private capital and increase investment in electricity. The government adopted flexible management methods and signed franchise agreements. This is an example of better cooperation between the government and the private sector. .

Morocco’s experience has been to strengthen cooperation with local governments and electricity users and to strengthen rural power supply. In 1995, Morocco’s rural power supply was only 18%. In 2010, 33,150 villages in Morocco were energized and the rural power supply rate reached 96.8%.

South Africa’s experience was the establishment of the State Power Administration in 1995 to formulate national power development plans and prices, and power sales were operated by power generation companies. Private companies could also produce electricity, adopt government regulation, and state-owned companies and private companies operate together. Participants hope to reduce electricity prices through electricity reforms and provide consumers with better services.
