ICAROS Brings New Experiences to VR Exercise for Experiencers

Virtual reality is entering the gym, and the creators of related equipment think that VR machines can stimulate people's enthusiasm for exercise, and some sports experts questioned. Johannes Scholl is betting that virtual reality can make people keen to exercise.

Schoeller's startup company Icaros, headquartered in Munich, Germany, has developed a VR sports machine. The machine provides a core workout that will make the user feel like flying and deep sea diving. About 200 gymnasiums and entertainment centers in London, Tokyo and other cities have already installed machines that sell for $10,000 (including shipping and other costs). A low-cost home version of $2,000 is under development and may be available early next year.

Sholer pointed out, "At the gym, you can't find anything else that is comparable to ours." He co-founded Icaros with industrial designer Michael Schmidt in 2015.

For decades, the fitness industry has been trying to make exercise less silly—from installing a television on a treadmill to using apps to encourage users to exercise on time—as planned—but technology cannot help eliminate exercise. Boring. As part of a freshman community, Shawler believes that the appeal of video games, coupled with immersive VR, will help solve this problem.

VirZOOM, headquartered in Cambridge, Mass., transformed the bicycle machine into a VR controller, allowing players to gallop and drive Mercedes F1 cars. An augmented reality startup in Helsinki, Finland overlays digital images on a climbing wall, allowing rock climbers to rock while playing games or fighting each other. Other relatively low-key solutions include home exercise products built around VR archery, shooting, and boxing games, and enthusiasts say they help strengthen upper body strength and weight loss.

Proponents of this type of technology point out that Pokemon Go is a good example of technology that promotes people to exercise. Less than a week after the app was launched in July of last year, players from all over the world have enthusiastically stepped out of the house to play the game in nearby communities and parks. In cities such as Sydney and New York, there are even players organizing large-scale catching elf hiking activities. According to researchers at Stanford University and Microsoft, the game has caused the most fascinated players to walk around more often than usual by 25%.

Sports experts are not optimistic

Sports experts do not think that high-tech products can make people more exercise, or insist on exercise habits. Innovative technologies such as underwater headsets and automatic running shoes that can adjust tightness can hardly arouse the public's motivation. Remco Polman, head of sports and nutrition research at the Queensland University of Technology in Brisbane, said: “The majority of people who use this type of technology are people who have exercise habits, and people who do not exercise very much do not use it. ."

He pointed out that Pokemon Go should encourage more people to go out for activities, but gamified exercise activity may not be able to induce the brain to do something that the body itself resists. He said that instead of stacking all sorts of fancy things, it's better to find ways to enjoy the sport itself—for example, outdoors—that's the key to being able to maintain exercise habits for a long period of time.

"The problem with using external motivation to exercise is that you will only go when the prize is not finished," Polman said. "Once you have collected all the elves, what other reasons do you have outside activities? What?"

Bring a sport that cannot be done in reality

Ihoros's Shale does not agree with this, saying that some activities, such as traditional sports, are not suitable for conducting in a virtual environment but should be conducted outdoors. However, he believes that VR fitness can take people to places they couldn't otherwise.

“I like cycling and snowboarding on the roads, but I prefer to do these sports outdoors,” said Shawler. “In VR, I like to do things that I have dreamed of for a long time but could not do in reality. ”

Icaros advocates core exercises that can improve physical balance and stability. In this exercise, the user places the knees, elbows and forearms in a foam filled cup, then wears a VR helmet and holds the handles with both hands. When flying or diving, they mainly use the muscles of the abdomen, back, and legs to control the navigation of the device; the hand controller allows them to fire on the target during game play. A Bloomberg reporter played for about ten minutes under moderate difficulty and sweated. The amount of exercise is equivalent to flat support.

In addition to the home version, Icaros has also developed second-generation sports machines for professional gyms. Shawler said that the new generation of products will provide more intense aerobic exercise and muscle exercise activities based on the concept of using animal-like action exercises.

"Now this machine emphasizes physical balance and coordination exercises like yoga," said Shaw, "while the next prototype will emphasize the entire body's strengthening exercise."

The company plans to add more software to the machine, including new space-themed games later this month and support for external developers.

Some gyms that have purchased sports machines from Icaros are optimistic about the product. Tokyo's The Body Ride personal fitness coach, Shuhei Miyajima, persuaded the boss to buy Icaros's machine in August last year. He said that many members feel excited about the product at first, but now they are tired of its existing two modes (flight and diving), and only use it once or twice a month. He said he is looking forward to Icaros launching a new software update, but he is still very happy that the gym can buy it back.

"Let's face it, exercise isn't that fun and playful," said Shuhei Miyajima. "But with this machine, people will feel inspired and excited because it is not the kind of traditional equipment."
