[Innovation] IBM develops artificial intelligence to participate in fashion design

After AlphaGo was fired, people began to discuss the areas in which artificial intelligence would replace humans. A Ph.D. in computer science at Tsinghua University said that industries that rely on rule design are threatened by artificial intelligence because it can be modeled. The implication is that artificial intelligence is more difficult to replace human beings in industries such as art that do not require objective measures.

However, just as the level of AlphaGo came more than a decade before the industry expected, the level of artificial intelligence art seems to have unexpectedly developed. According to FastCompany, last night's New York Metropolitan Fashion Celebration (Met Gala), a set of shiny dresses was actually designed by the IBM cognitive robot "Watson".

It is reported that the dress worn by the model Karolina Kurkova was designed by the British design studio Marchesa and Watson. This one-piece white tulle, embroidered with 150 pieces of LED lanterns, proves that humans and robots can work together to create something that seems impossible.

For the design of the dress, Marchesa's designers initially chose five emotions to express: joy, patience, excitement, encouragement and curiosity. They then entered the two data sets into IBM's color-identifying tool—an algorithm that uses color psychology to match emotional colors. These two datasets contain sketches from different designers and Marchesa's own dresses, allowing Watson to select and purify color combinations that match the design philosophy. The role of the color program is not to tell the designer what to do, but to provide a palette to implement the designer's ideas. IBM researchers said, "It’s basically a machine-guided designer."

Specifically, the LED light on the embroidered dress is a tone analyzer API that is connected to Watson's analytic tone. With the changes in the content of the two tags #MetGala and #CognitiveDress on site, Watson can generate from the palette. And change the color of the clothes in real time. If the text shows a higher value for "happiness," then IBM will discern it and let the skirt light up the bright rose light; if the "excitement" value is high, then the light will add a shadow...

In this sense, the Marchesa dress was not designed by Watson, but by Watson. On the basis of the human point of view, relying on computers to reduce the simplification of the creative process can be said to be cheating. However, from a scientific point of view, Watson strategist Jeff Arns said that this is indeed the support of technological innovation.

This effect is just a little trick with Watson. Its greatest significance lies in the coordination of artificial intelligence technology with human beings. It can help humans to strengthen their own creations. Like Irisvan Herpen, they started using technology as a way to inspire a few years ago, but the collaboration between IBM and Marchesa is more about ideas. Ideas, not just actual production. Looking back at the previous "Chef Watson", it was able to use cognitive learning to give people advice on recipes and food combinations. So, Watson's creativity is not just to tell the designer or the chef what to do, but to help them think – how they can do it and expand their thinking.

At present, the development of artificial intelligence technology is in the stage of cognitive intelligence like cognitive intelligence. Watson's initiative and creativity make artificial intelligence technology to a higher level in the pursuit of “humanoid”. As Jeff Arns said, “We believe that technology has considerable auxiliary significance. Maybe one day, can it create a real design?”
