Linear announced the LT3743, a synchronous step-down DC/DC converter designed to provide constant current for driving high current LEDs. The 5.5V to 36V input voltage range of this component makes it ideal for a wide range of applications including industrial, DLP projection and architectural lighting.

The LT3743 delivers up to 20A of continuous LED current from a nominal 12V input, providing over 80 watts. In pulsed LED applications, up to 40A LED current or 160 watts can be supplied from a 12V input. Up to 95% efficiency eliminates the need for external heat sinks, which greatly simplifies thermal design. The frequency adjustment pin allows the user to set the frequency between 100kHz and 1MHz, thus allowing the designer to optimize the efficiency while minimizing the size of the external components. Combined with a 4mm x 5mm QFN or thermally enhanced TSSOP-28 package, the LT3743 provides a very small, high power LED driver solution.
The LT3743 also offers PWM and CTRL_SELECT dimming, providing 3000:1 dimming capability at 3 LED current levels, making it ideal for color mixing applications such as DLP projectors. Similarly, the unique architecture of the LT3743 allows it to be converted between two regulated LED current levels in 2 microseconds, thus providing more accurate color mixing for RGB applications. Maintaining ±6% LED current accuracy ensures the most accurate LED brightness. Other features include output voltage regulation, open LED protection, overcurrent protection, and thermal derating circuitry.
