Osram develops large-size transparent ultra-thin OLED panels

On October 25th, Gaogong LED reporter learned from the website of OSRAM that OSRAM Opto Semiconductors successfully developed a prototype of OLED large transparent light source with a thickness of only a few hundred microns. Thanks to the new technology, there is no need for independent packaging, and the thinness is surprising. The transparent test sample has a luminous area of ​​210cm2, showing the huge potential of the OLED light source.

    It is understood that the test sample is a development of the TOPAS research project funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) with the goal of producing large transparent OLED modules with an area of ​​1 m2. The project will continue until 2011. Although the area of ​​the module needs to be further expanded in the future, the product prototype developed this time has already possessed many features that make OLED extraordinary. Extremely slim, no expensive packaging, thickness depends entirely on the carrier material substrate, currently between 300~700μm. The research project will focus on developing thinner carrier materials in the future to create thinner OLEDs. It will then be easier to apply to a wide range of applications, can be made into a variety of shapes, take up very little space, and can be seamlessly integrated into the design environment, only to be detected when the power is turned on.

    The 17x17cm2 OLED panel clearly indicates the future direction of the OLED lighting market, and the large ultra-thin transparent light source is the trend. “Transparent OLEDs and flexible OLEDs will add a new aesthetic to lighting solutions in the future,” said KarstenHeuser, head of the OLED division at OSRAM Opto Semiconductors in Germany. “The future of OLED light sources is expected to be integrated into room screens and furniture, for example, the entire window is made up of Made of OLED, it can be naturally lit during the day and shines at night."

    The latest OLED will be on display at the Professional Lighting Design Conference (PLDC) in Berlin from October 29th to 31st, 2009, presenting the latest developments to the participants.
