When it comes to the brand of Mitsubishi, many independent automakers owe their survival to the company. Most of these brands rely heavily on Mitsubishi engines, as they lack their own research and development capabilities. Without access to Mitsubishi's engine technology, many would not have been able to compete in the market. This is why it's often said that Mitsubishi's strength lies more in selling engines than in selling cars.
In recent years, Mitsubishi's market share in China has been modest. However, the success of the Outlander model has significantly boosted its sales figures. If it weren't for this contribution, Mitsubishi’s performance might have looked even worse. To improve its standing, the company has accelerated its brand renewal efforts.
A few months ago, Mitsubishi unveiled the XM Concept, a cross-border MPV that generated quite a buzz due to its futuristic design and advanced concept. Recently, news about the production version has surfaced again, confirming that the official production model, named Mitsubishi XM, will make its debut in Jakarta, Indonesia, on the 10th of next month.
The production model, based on the XM Concept, closely resembles the original in design. According to official images released by the manufacturer, the similarity between the two is over 80%. The X-shaped front grille is striking, with chrome strips extending into the LED headlights on either side. The fog light area features a split design, which differs slightly from the concept car.
The body’s side lines feature double waistlines, and the arched wheel arches are clearly visible, just like in the concept. The suspended roof design has also been retained, a popular element among major automotive brands. However, some observers have noted that the side profile bears a strong resemblance to the BYD Song MPV.
At the rear, the three-dimensional L-shaped taillights are both technical and highly recognizable. The same silver trim bar found at the front is also present at the back. From front to back, the Mitsubishi XM appears more like an SUV, with a clear crossover feel. Although no interior images have been released, reports suggest it will come with a three-row, seven-seat layout—specifically 2+3+2.
Under the hood, the XM will be powered by a 1.5L four-cylinder naturally aspirated engine paired with either a manual or CVT transmission. It is expected to go into production at Mitsubishi’s plant in Indonesia in October. While the domestic introduction date remains unclear, the vehicle’s stylish design and spacious seating should appeal to many Chinese consumers. Of course, pricing will be a key factor. Considering the affordability of the all-wheel-drive 7-seater joint-venture Mitsubishi Outlander within the 200,000 RMB range, there's reason to believe the XM will be similarly priced and accessible.
Positioned similarly to the Renault Espace, the Mitsubishi XM blends the off-road capability of an SUV with the practicality of an MPV. Unlike the Espace, which has a more romantic and fashionable look, the XM exudes a more futuristic and sci-fi aesthetic. For younger buyers who value individuality, this could be a major selling point. Would you be excited to see this model introduced in your country soon?
