Mitsubishi has long been a key player in the automotive industry, and many independent brands owe their existence to its technology. A large number of these brands rely heavily on Mitsubishi engines, as they lack the research and development capabilities to create their own powertrains. Without access to Mitsubishi's engines, many would struggle to survive in the market. This is why it's often said that Mitsubishi's engine sales are more profitable than its car sales. In recent years, Mitsubishi's market presence in China hasn't been particularly strong, but the success of the Outlander helped boost its overall sales figures. Without this contribution, its performance might have been even worse.
To boost sales and remain relevant, Mitsubishi has accelerated its brand transformation. Recently, the company unveiled a concept vehicle called the Mitsubishi XM Concept, which generated quite a buzz with its futuristic design and advanced features. Now, there’s new news about this model — the production version, named the Mitsubishi XM, will make its official debut in Jakarta, Indonesia, on the 10th of next month.
The production model closely follows the design of the XM Concept, with a reported 80% similarity between the two. The front grille features an X-shaped design with chrome trim extending into the LED headlights, giving it a sharp and modern look. The fog light area is slightly different from the concept, using a split design instead. The side profile includes double waistlines and pronounced wheel arches, similar to the concept, while the roof design is also retained — a popular feature among major automakers.
However, some observers have noted that the side design bears a striking resemblance to the BYD Song MPV. At the rear, the three-dimensional L-shaped taillights add a high-tech touch, and the silver bar running across the back echoes the front design. Overall, the Mitsubishi XM looks more like an SUV than a traditional MPV, with a clear crossover aesthetic. While no interior images have been released, reports suggest it will come with a 2+3+2 seating layout, offering seven seats for family use.
Under the hood, the XM will be powered by a 1.5L four-cylinder naturally aspirated engine paired with either a manual or CVT transmission. Production is set to begin at Mitsubishi's plant in Indonesia in October, though the timeline for its domestic introduction remains unclear. With its stylish design and spacious seven-seat configuration, it's likely to attract a wide range of buyers once it hits the market.
Priced competitively, the XM is expected to be within reach of many consumers, especially considering the success of the 200,000 RMB-range Mitsubishi Outlander. Positioned similarly to the Renault Espace, the XM blends the off-road capability of an SUV with the practicality of an MPV. Unlike the Espace, which exudes elegance and style, the XM takes a more futuristic and tech-forward approach, making it appealing to younger, style-conscious buyers. Would you be excited to see it introduced in your country soon?
