New energy vehicles on photovoltaic highways "run farther and farther"?

New energy vehicles need to charge while driving at high speeds, and this is a key challenge that photovoltaic roads must address. Fortunately, wireless charging technology for vehicles has become increasingly mature. In 2013, South Korea built the world’s first wireless charging bus lane, marking a significant step forward. More recently, in May of this year, Qualcomm successfully demonstrated wireless charging for electric vehicles traveling at 100 km/h, proving that the technology is not only feasible but also practical for real-world use. Photovoltaic roads are emerging as a promising solution, combining renewable energy with transportation infrastructure. For instance, the high-speed road surface of Jinan South Ring Expressway has already been connected to the power grid, generating electricity that is used to charge electric vehicles. According to Zhang Hongchao, a professor from Tongji University, integrating photovoltaic surfaces with electric vehicle technology can enable mobile charging along highways, transforming the entire national highway network into a “solar charging treasure.” In France, the village of Tourouvre became home to the world’s first solar-powered road on the RD5 provincial road. This innovative project, though small, generates enough electricity to support local infrastructure and even provides a model for future developments. Similar initiatives are being explored around the globe, with countries like the U.S., Italy, the Netherlands, and Germany investing in research to make photovoltaic roads more efficient and scalable. In China, researchers have made significant progress in developing wireless charging systems for electric vehicles. Professor Yang Qingxin from Tianjin University led a project that integrated wind and solar power into an intelligent microgrid system for wireless charging. This breakthrough allows electric vehicles to be charged independently of the main grid, reducing strain on the power system and promoting cleaner energy use. The technology has been recognized as internationally advanced, with potential applications in remote areas such as islands and scenic spots where traditional power grids may be unreliable. Despite the advantages, photovoltaic roads come with challenges. One major issue is the high cost—France’s first solar road, which was just 1 km long, cost over 5 million euros. Additionally, the lifespan of solar panels and maintenance costs remain concerns. There are also safety risks associated with the technology, although ongoing research aims to mitigate these issues. While the initial investment is high, many experts believe the long-term benefits outweigh the costs. China, in particular, has taken a leading role in photovoltaic road development, using advanced materials to reduce costs and increase durability. The electricity generated from these roads can offset the higher installation and maintenance expenses, making it a sustainable and economically viable option. Wireless charging itself is becoming more common. Inductive charging, which uses magnetic fields to transfer energy without physical contact, is safer and more convenient, especially in adverse weather conditions. Some systems even use laser or microwave technology, allowing vehicles to charge while on the move. As more cars adopt wireless charging capabilities, the integration of photovoltaic roads could revolutionize how we power our transportation. With continued innovation and investment, photovoltaic roads may soon become a standard feature of modern infrastructure, offering a clean, efficient, and sustainable way to power electric vehicles.
