Eindhoven, Netherlands – Philips Lighting (Amsterdam Stock Exchange: LIGHT), a global leader in lighting solutions, has secured a long-term partnership with Wim Peters, one of the largest tomato growers in the Netherlands. Following a severe hailstorm in June 2016 that destroyed two of his greenhouses, Peters chose to rebuild them and once again rely on Philips Lighting for advanced LED inter-plant lighting. In addition, Philips will supply LED technology for a new greenhouse to support Peters’ expanding operations and meet the rising demand for high-quality, LED-grown tomatoes.
The new LED modules offer significantly higher light levels compared to those installed in 2013, which were up to 20 km long. This upgrade is part of a broader trend in horticulture where light intensity has steadily increased over the past decade. Peters previously used a 55 μmol/m²/s LED inter-plant lighting system, but now he has opted for a more powerful 75 μmol/m²/s version. "Higher light levels help my winter crops grow more evenly, improving both quality and taste," he explained. "It also promotes better balance between vegetative and reproductive growth, leading to more consistent yields."
Udo van Slooten, Global General Manager of Philips LED Plant Lighting, noted that many growers are seeking similar improvements. "To address this growing need, we launched a new generation of GreenPower LED inter-plant lighting modules earlier this year, featuring a system efficiency of 3.0 μmol/J. These modules are easy to install and maintain, reducing overall project costs," he said. Growers in Belgium, Russia, and France have already started transitioning to higher light levels.
Philips will install over 26,000 GreenPower LED inter-plant lighting modules across two newly rebuilt greenhouses, which are expected to be completed by October 2017. The system will combine HPS top lighting with Philips GreenPower LED inter-plant lighting, covering a total area of 10.6 hectares. The installation will be carried out by Codema BE de Lier, a trusted partner of Philips, working alongside Agrolux to deliver an optimal hybrid lighting solution.
