Eindhoven, the Netherlands – Philips Lighting (Amsterdam Stock Exchange: LIGHT), a global leader in lighting solutions, has recently secured a long-term partnership with Wim Peters, one of the largest tomato growers in the Netherlands. Following a severe hailstorm in June 2016 that damaged two of his greenhouses, Peters chose to rebuild and once again rely on Philips for advanced LED inter-plant lighting. In addition to the two rebuilt greenhouses, he is also expanding his operations by constructing a new greenhouse, which will be equipped with the latest Philips GreenPower LED technology to meet growing market demands.
The new LED modules offer significantly higher light levels compared to the previous installation in 2013. Wim Peters opted for a 75 μmol/m²/s LED inter-plant lighting system, an upgrade from the earlier 55 μmol/m²/s model. “Higher light levels have made my winter crops grow more uniformly, improving both quality and flavor,†Peters explained. He also noted that the enhanced lighting promotes more balanced growth between the plant’s vegetative and reproductive stages, resulting in better leaf yield and overall productivity.
Udo van Slooten, Global General Manager of Philips LED Plant Lighting, highlighted the increasing demand for higher light levels among growers. “We’ve seen a trend across the industry where farmers are looking for more efficient and effective lighting solutions,†he said. “To address this, we launched a new generation of GreenPower modules with improved system efficiency of 3.0 μmol/J. These modules are not only easier to install and maintain but also help reduce overall project costs.â€
Philips will be installing over 26,000 GreenPower LED inter-plant lighting modules in the newly rebuilt greenhouses, which are expected to be completed by October 2017. The system will integrate HPS top lighting with the new LED modules, covering a total area of 10.6 hectares. The project will be carried out by Codema BE de Lier, a trusted partner of Philips, working alongside Agrolux to deliver the most efficient hybrid lighting solution for growers.
This collaboration reflects the growing importance of smart, energy-efficient lighting in modern agriculture, helping farmers like Wim Peters achieve higher yields, better quality, and sustainable growth.
