The emergence of a new type of material that is more rigid than steel makes robots that create muscle flexibility and superior strength come true.
At present, scientists have developed a gel that is as flexible as muscle but more powerful.
This aerogel is lighter than air, harder than steel, and soft like rubber. The material consists of a carbon nanotube strip (extremely tiny hollow carbon tube) that is extremely malleable and can be 2.2 times the original length or width in a few milliseconds after charging.
When the researchers talked about the technology in the journal Science, the gel uses a thin-film structure that can withstand several times the stress that ordinary skeletal muscles can withstand. Once the pressure is felt, it will “freeze†in its original position and will not be bent due to the increase of external force.
The American research team led by Professor Ray Baughman of the University of Texas at Dallas declared that these solid sheet-like aerogels have the same density as air and have a stronger strength factor than steel. Dr. John Madden, an engineer at the University of British Columbia in Canada, believes that this material has a diamond-like side and a rubbery side. It is extremely hard in the "longitudinal stretch" direction, but extremely fragile in its lateral direction, and its lateral strength is only a millionth of the longitudinal strength.
Dr. Madden pointed out in the journal Science that this aerogel material will gradually be used in medical devices, robot manufacturing, and even in human implants.
