Smart speaker market: foreign markets are relatively mature, and the domestic market is still in the early stage of development.

According to a recent survey conducted by Edison Research, a well-known national public radio and market research firm, smart speaker adoption in the U.S. has reached 16%, marking a significant increase of 128% compared to January of the previous year. This rapid growth highlights the increasing integration of smart speakers into everyday life. As reported by PhoneArena, smart speakers, which combine audio technology with artificial intelligence, were pioneered by Amazon. Despite being on the market for only three years, they have become an essential part of many American households. A staggering 65% of users expressed that they wouldn’t want to go back to a life without a smart speaker. The survey also revealed that 34% of users turn to their smart speakers for listening to the radio, effectively replacing smartphones. Additionally, 30% of users utilize them while watching television. Beyond entertainment, controlling home appliances like lights and adjusting room temperature is one of the main reasons people purchase smart speakers. In fact, 38% of users consider buying a second smart speaker to manage more rooms or additional devices. Accenture/Harris Interactive, a leading technology consultancy, found through online interviews that two-thirds of respondents reduced their smartphone usage after acquiring a smart speaker. This shift indicates how deeply these devices are influencing user behavior. Yan Renjie, general manager of MediaTek’s family entertainment products group, shared that the smart speaker market saw only 3 million units sold in 2016. By last year, the market had exploded, reaching 30 million units—a tenfold increase. Currently, the global smart speaker market is more developed in foreign regions, with major tech companies like Amazon, Google, Microsoft, and Apple actively involved. While the domestic market is still in its early stages, it has attracted numerous Chinese internet and tech giants such as Baidu, Alibaba, Tencent, JD.com, Xiaomi, and Lenovo. Many smaller companies have also entered the space, signaling strong future potential for the industry. In the U.S., Amazon Echo has sold over 10 million units in just two years, with sales exceeding $1 billion. Morgan Stanley analysts have even called smart speakers “the most successful consumer electronics product” since the iPad. With major players like Google, Apple, and Facebook entering the market, some organizations predict that smart speakers will be in 75% of American homes by 2020, reaching nearly 94.2 million units. In China, tech giants and AI startups have been actively developing this market. Alibaba introduced the “Tmall Genie,” while the University of Science and Technology and JD.com partnered to launch Linglong Technology and released the “Dingdong Speaker.” Lenovo launched the “Lenovo Smart Speaker,” Xiaomi introduced the “Xiaomi AI Speaker,” and companies backed by Google investment, like Ask.fm, have also entered the scene with their own “Question Speaker.” Looking at 2017, the smart speaker market began to take shape. According to Canalys, shipments exceeded 30 million units that year. In 2018, global shipments are expected to reach 56.3 million units, marking what many consider the “decisive year” for the mass adoption of smart speakers.
