The sweeping robot market has experienced tremendous growth in recent years, with these smart devices becoming increasingly popular among households worldwide. While international brands like iRobot and Dyson have long dominated the scene, domestic companies are now making a strong impact. Among them, Xiaomi’s Mi Home Sweeping Robot, launched last year, has quickly gained attention for its advanced navigation systems, powerful cleaning performance, and excellent value for money. This product has proven to be a serious contender in the global market, challenging even the top-tier international models.
When the first generation of the Xiaomi sweeping robot was released, it created a huge buzz—similar to how Xiaomi's first smartphone revolutionized the industry. With an impressive configuration, advanced cleaning algorithms, and a price tag of just 1,699 yuan, it quickly sold out and remained in high demand for months. The success of this product not only highlighted Xiaomi's growing influence but also signaled a shift in consumer preferences toward more affordable yet high-performing home appliances.
One of the main reasons the first-generation Xiaomi robot became so popular is that it was developed by Stone Technology, a key player in Xiaomi’s ecosystem. From the start, Stone aimed to compete with global giants like iRobot. By offering a product with over 80% of the performance of the iRobot Roomba 980 at less than a third of the price, Xiaomi effectively disrupted the market. As a result, many consumers began questioning why similar robots abroad were so expensive, highlighting the growing influence of Chinese tech companies.
Market reception has been overwhelmingly positive. On JD.com, the robot achieved an almost perfect 100% positive rating. Although there are some negative reviews, they are extremely rare, which speaks volumes about the product’s reliability and user satisfaction.
Now, the company has launched the second generation of the product under the new name "Stone Sweeping Robot," priced at 2,499 yuan—up by 800 yuan from the previous model. The key upgrade includes a mopping function, allowing the robot to both sweep and mop, addressing multiple cleaning needs in one go. The crowdfunding campaign was an instant success, hitting its goal within the first three minutes and reaching an astonishing 1,662% of the target.
Looking at the differences between the first and second generations, the upgrades are clear. The second version supports both sweeping and mopping, a feature many users find appealing as it solves two cleaning tasks at once. However, some experts caution that combining these functions may not always deliver optimal results. In the past, many brands introduced similar designs, but often ended up compromising on performance—either failing to clean thoroughly or leaving floors wet and unclean.
Industry experts like “Sweeper Great God X Wing†have pointed out that while the concept of a combined sweeper and mop is appealing, the execution can be tricky. He noted that these machines aren’t specifically designed for mopping, which might lead to insufficient pressure and poor cleaning of stubborn dirt. As a result, he still recommends purchasing a dedicated sweeper and mopping robot separately.
Wang Jiannan, another well-known figure in the smart home space, agrees with this view but remains open-minded. He acknowledges that the new Stone robot hasn't been fully tested yet, and while X Wing raised valid concerns, the internal team at Stone is confident in their design. He adds that the new model doesn’t support standalone mopping mode, which could be a drawback for some users.
So, the big question remains: How many people are actually looking for a multi-functional robot that sweeps and mops? While the initial response is promising, real-world performance will ultimately determine whether this product becomes a long-term success or just a short-lived trend. For now, it’s safe to say that the Stone Sweeping Robot has made a bold move into the competitive world of smart home appliances—and the market is watching closely.
