Can netbooks re-emerge? It may be just a reproduction

[Abstract] Although there are advantages in netbook life, price, and portability, performance, keyboard feel, and products such as tablet PCs, Ultrabooks, and Chromebooks are better choices.

The Verge Chinese Station reported on February 21

A few days ago, one of my colleagues, Chaim Gartenberg, saw a portable laptop called the GPD Pocket on the Indiegogo crowdfunding website. The current funding of this product on Indiegogo is still very hot. Chaim said that the biggest advantage of this device is its size. It has a 7-inch screen, is absolutely very small, very portable, and the price is also in place, as long as 399 US dollars (about 2740 yuan). Although the description I heard from Chaim's mouth was very good, in fact, one of the most critical features of the GPD Pocket he overlooked is actually a term we used to be familiar with more than ten years ago: netbooks. So after ten years, is the Internet really cool? Maybe you think of the days of the rise of the Internet, but I don't think so.

If you are not familiar with the history of the Internet, then I will give you a brief introduction. Netbooks began to appear in 2007, starting with the Asus Eee PC. The first-generation Eee PC is a notebook that sells at the same price of 399 US dollars. It has a 7-inch display, a relatively entry-level processor, and 4GB of flash memory to replace the hard disk. If you are a university student, then this is a good choice. Eee PC Netbook has very good portability, but to put it plainly is not a Windows notebook before. There are also Linux system products like the OLPC XO-1. Although it works, it still feels a bit cheap. The netbook has good battery life and can be charged at any time. It is a good temporary emergency device. The slogan of ASUS Rock Solid & Heart Touching at the time of launch of the Eee PC was impressive.

In the next few years, basically every PC maker has launched a cheap entry-level netbook. If you need a device that is lightweight and only used to write papers and browse websites, the netbook is perfect. All this changed until the advent of the iPad and the first MacBook Air in 2010. In addition to the $1,500 MacBook Air as the lightest and thinnest notebook on the market, most netbooks are starting to come with large-capacity hard drives and full-version Windows systems, and Linux is gradually being abandoned. In addition, the battery life is also extended to 6 to 8 hours, and the screen is getting better and better, and the keyboard input feels better.

However, there is still a major compromise on the Internet, which is the Intel Atom low-power processor, and this processor is designed to handle some basic multi-tasking. For some netbooks, it is smooth when running a Linux system, but if this configuration you want to run Windows, it seems to begin to fail (yes, you can also choose dual systems, but usually a $ 400 price The notebook wants a dual system, the effect is not much better.) In addition, the keys to netbooks are usually too compact. Although my hands are not large, I feel like a giant's hand in front of a netbook. Therefore, I'm personally cautious about the attitude of the early netbooks, but I can't say that netbooks are not suitable for everyone. After all, different people, needs and standards are not the same.

When the netbook developed to the hottest, I also bought a spare device. However, when I joined the CES report with a netbook in 2012, their shortcomings became more and more obvious. At the same time, high-performance, ultra-low-power Ultrabook products are gradually becoming active, tablet productivity is increasing, and Chromebook products can provide similar features at the same low price. Although there are still netbooks on the market for sale, there is usually little attention.

The GPD Pocket crowdfunding on Indiegogo seems to be a product for retro notebook enthusiasts. There are good and bad aspects. Small size, long battery life, low price and a complete desktop operating system, and even Ubuntu Linux. If it can meet your needs, I think this is a good thing. But for me, the performance bottleneck of the Atom processor and the keyboard are too small to remind me of the CES show that really affected the work efficiency.

Personally, I may not buy a product like the GPD Pocket. After all, my smart phone is already capable of handling mail and web browsing tasks. And when I need a lot of text input, I will choose my MacBook, and if I need temporary Record, simply use the pen and paper.

In addition to this, I have three computers in the office and the daily work needs are adequate. Therefore, I will not add a device such as a netbook that is not too useful, after all, electronic products are not stray dogs. However, I still hope that the more companies like GPD, the better, can launch some novel types of products and let friends who have never heard of the Internet before to experience it.
