Facebook and Airbus actively promote high-altitude drone plans to expand radio spectrum capacity

According to reports, Facebook previously revealed on the blog that it will conduct high-altitude drone projects with Airbus. It has now been confirmed that the two companies are joining forces to provide more Internet access services for remote areas and are lobbying together. The International Telecommunication Union provides more capacity for the spectrum of radio signals.

According to reports, Facebook and Airbus recently teamed up to lobby the International Telecommunications Union to provide more radio signal spectrum capacity for high-altitude pseudo-satellite (HAPS).

Facebook and Airbus actively promote high-altitude drone plans to expand radio spectrum capacity

As early as 2015, Resolution 160 of the World Radiocommunication Conference (WRC) required the International Telecommunication Union to study the additional spectrum requirements of the high-altitude platform communication system (HAPS) fixed terminal link to provide a wider Internet connection service." .

Although social media platforms like Facebook and aerospace manufacturing giant Airbus may seem unlikely to cooperate, in fact both companies have their own solar drone systems.

Facebook publicly acknowledged that the development of the high-altitude drone Aquila had conducted two test flights. In June 2016, the Aquila UAV took the first take-off test. The aircraft crashed during the landing after 96 minutes of flying at high altitude. The second flight test was successfully carried out on May 22, 2017, with a flight time of 1 hour and 46 minutes.

At the same time, Airbus is testing the T-tailed Zephyr drone series, which has been flying for up to 14 days without refueling, breaking the flight record of high-altitude drones.

Developed by Facebook and Airbus, these solar-powered laser network transmission drones fly more than 70,000 feet per week, with the goal of providing Internet access to the population of remote areas.

Facebook said on its open code blog: "We are working with Airbus to advance new developments in spectrum and aviation policy and continue to demonstrate the feasibility of HAPS systems providing Internet services." But will Facebook and Airbus' new partnerships be combined? It is unclear to develop and test these two drone projects.
