First off, why am I writing this post? Well, today I stumbled upon one of the most popular articles around, and while I tried to understand it, I ended up feeling a bit confused. But hey, I’m confident I can create something even better! After reading a friend's article and doing some research on Kodi, I realized how simple and user-friendly it is for beginners. That got me so excited that I just had to write this guide. My goal here is to make building your own home media setup easier and more straightforward for everyone. No hidden agendas—just helping folks enjoy their entertainment.

Head over to [kodi.tv](https://kodi.tv/download) to get Kodi.
Here’s how you can download it:
- For Windows 7/8/10, grab the first option.
- Linux users don’t have too much to worry about—it’s pretty straightforward.
- Android users, especially those with TV boxes, should check the compatibility of their device. Most commonly, you’ll encounter ARMV7 or ARMv8 configurations. Unsure? Just ask your seller, or try both versions—they’re usually compatible.

Let’s dive into the usage instructions now, focusing on localization and adding network shares.
First things first: you’ll need a router and a USB storage device that can connect via USB. Plug the USB drive into your router, like the RT-AC68U.
Log in to your router’s interface:

Once logged in, navigate to USB-related applications and then the server center.

Enable SAMBA to allow easy access from other devices. Enable anonymous access and click Apply. Your settings will be saved.

Once Kodi is installed, launch it. Initially, the interface is in English, which can be a bit confusing. Let’s switch it to Chinese for ease of use.

Click the Settings button in the top-left corner.

Navigate to the second row and select the first option.

The default font settings won’t display Chinese characters properly.

Switch to the second option.

Now, the font settings support Chinese characters. This is essential for localizing Kodi.

Next, change the language to Chinese (Simplified).

Select Chinese (Simplified) from the list.

You'll see a progress bar indicating the changes are being applied.

Almost instantly, the interface switches to Chinese.

If you want to adjust the time format, select the fourth option and choose 24-hour Beijing time.

Subtitle settings are next. You can download subtitles directly through Kodi.

Select your preferred language, and download subtitles in Chinese (Simplified).

You’ll notice subtitles are now available in Chinese.

Time to add shared network files. Navigate to the main interface and select a folder like “Videos.â€

Choose the file you wish to add.

Select the “Add Videos†option.

SMB is the protocol typically used when configuring SAMBA on your router.

You’ll see your router’s name listed (RT-AC68U).

Inside, you’ll find your USB storage directories. Select “My†to browse.

Pick the file you want to view.

Confirm your selection, and you’ll see the new directory appear in the file path.

A prompt will ask you to refresh the folder you just added.

To view later, simply select the file, like a movie.

You’ll find the movie in the newly added directory.

Click “Open†to start watching.

For iPads or iPhones, you can also use ACEplayer, which is free and great for viewing shared content.
Android users can download ES File Browser for similar functionality.
That’s it! You’ve now set up an ultra-lightweight home network sharing system. Use your router’s download feature to save your favorite shows to a USB drive connected to your router. Enjoy ad-free streaming anytime!
Feel free to reach out if you have any questions or feedback. This is my first deep dive into Kodi, and I’d love to hear from others who are exploring this tool.
Lastly, if your RT-AC68 is running a U.S.-customized firmware, check out my original post where I detail how to flash Merlin firmware.
