According to a recent report from the Yonhap News Agency on July 24, a research team led by Professor Quanning Kui at the Korean Institute of Medical Research affiliated with Pusan National University announced on the same day that their project on an AI-driven Korean medical diagnostic expert system had been selected as one of the new initiatives under the South Korean Ministry of Education. Over the next three years, the team plans to develop a clinically applicable Korean medical diagnostic system leveraging advanced artificial intelligence technologies.
Professor Quanning Kui mentioned that this Korean medical diagnostics expert system development project represents a continuation of the pioneering work initiated by the 1987 all-electronic project of the Korea Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute. It aims to create the very first disk operating system version of a Korean medical diagnostic expert system in the country.
It was also noted that the system would incorporate innovative elements such as constitutional medicine derived from the four images and image-based medicine, which are key components reflecting the unique medical characteristics of Korea and South Korea.
In South Korea, efforts to develop a Korean medical expert system have seen earlier attempts, including the Stroke Diagnostic Expert System in 1998 and the subsequent Stroke Diagnosis Project in 2008. However, these projects did not progress beyond initial stages. Professor Quanning Kui expressed his hope that this initiative would demonstrate how high-level artificial intelligence could be effectively integrated into traditional Korean medicine, opening up new possibilities for healthcare innovation. This effort is being compiled by intern Liu Rui and reviewed by Wei Yue.
As I write this, there's an ongoing buzz among tech enthusiasts about how this project might transform the landscape of both AI and traditional medicine in South Korea. The potential impact on healthcare delivery is immense, especially given the growing interest in personalized medicine and the integration of modern technologies with ancient healing practices.
