On the evening of the 27th, according to reports from Kyodo News, ZMP, a forward-thinking Japanese company specializing in the development of autonomous driving technology for vehicles, has recently created a compact delivery robot capable of moving independently on sidewalks. This robot could be utilized for food delivery services and express shipments, addressing the staffing shortages in the logistics and catering industries. Currently, ZMP is collaborating with RIDE ON EXPRESS, the operator of the popular sushi delivery chain "Silver Bowl." They plan to initiate trial operations in August and hope to work with the government to revise relevant laws.
The delivery robot measures 133 centimeters in length and 109 centimeters in height. It moves at a maximum speed of 6 kilometers per hour while using sensors and cameras to scan its surroundings in all directions. Customers can use their phones to contact the arriving robot and unlock it to retrieve their orders. Equipped with advanced navigation systems, the robot can analyze routes to reach its destination based on preloaded maps.
While companies like Amazon and Japan's Lotte have explored using small drones for deliveries, ZMP’s president, Taniguchi, emphasized that food items are better suited for delivery robots rather than UAVs. The robot is designed to carry up to 100 kilograms of cargo and is expected to include enhanced refrigeration capabilities in future models.
However, there are legal challenges to address. Japan lacks specific regulations for robots traveling autonomously on public roads. Therefore, initial trials will take place on private property. ZMP is advocating for their robot to be treated similarly to individual electric vehicles, which are classified as pedestrians under current laws. Yet, numerous concerns remain regarding liability in case of accidents.
Internationally, Domino's Pizza began testing delivery robots in Australia back in 2016, indicating growing momentum towards practical implementation. Taniguchi expressed his desire for Japan to follow suit and achieve widespread adoption as soon as possible.
