Littelfuse , a global leader in circuit protection , today announced the introduction of the SL1010A series of gas discharge tubes (GDT). This small-sized three-terminal surface mount device protects a wide range of communications equipment from fast-rising transient voltages typically caused by lightning strikes. The SL1010A Series GDT can withstand a lightning surge current of 5kA in an 8/20μs environment. Its off-state capacitance as low as 1.5pF minimizes insertion loss and helps maintain signal integrity in data communication lines. The low arc voltage (~10V) reduces heat buildup in the event of prolonged power failure.
With a diameter of only 5 mm, the three-terminal SL1010A Series GDT is ideal for small package applications requiring high energy tolerance and compact size. Applications include new telecommunications systems with micro-components, last-mile telecom equipment such as ultra-fast DSL, industrial RS-485, Power over Ethernet, and home gateways.

Just as important as their low capacitance is the capacitor. It does not change due to changes in DC and signal voltage. This eliminates distortion effects caused by changing capacitance."
