Shanghai, China, April 18, 2018 – IBELIVE is funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and includes Osram Opto Semiconductors, Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Optics and Precision Engineering, TEMICON and Continental R&D Alliance to jointly develop forward-looking research projects for extremely compact and slim optical components for data visualization and lighting applications. IBELIVE is a German acronym that means an innovative hybrid diffuser with a slim lighting system that can be customized for light distribution. The project will begin in October 2017 and will last for three years.
At present, there is no effective method for reducing the thickness of the light source LED chip on the market. In contrast, optical components have great potential in miniaturization. Therefore, the IBELIVE project came into being, aiming to develop extremely compact and versatile optical components. The alliance is coordinated by OSRAM Opto Semiconductors and will work together to develop a common process for applications requiring compact demand. The project partners are directly targeted at many different markets, including high-performance compact head-up displays, ultra-thin camera flashes and selective direct display backlights.

The partners brought years of experience in optical simulation, surface microstructure and photovoltaic system integration to the research project. The project covers the entire value-added chain from optical component development to volume production and new technology testing in sample applications. In addition to coordinating projects, OSRAM Opto Semiconductors is responsible for system concepts, two application-based demonstration device designs, and research installation and testing concepts. Continental is designing and developing two compact head-up displays with different projection sources. The hybrid diffuser to be developed to achieve this goal will play a central role in creating images and efficient use of light in the heads-up display. The focus of its research will be on the image quality perceived by the drive. The Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Optics and Precision Engineering is working on methods and algorithms for designing hybrid diffuser optics and techniques for generating deterministic surface structures. The tasks assigned to TEMICON include the use of interference lithography to cover nanoscale structures, the development of injection molding techniques, and the re-engineering of ultra-thin double-sided diffuser optics into a range of products.

During the project, the research consortium will study flexible design and manufacturing processes for space-constrained applications for data visualization or lighting.
