Artificial intelligence is a double-edged sword, offering both benefits and challenges. According to recent reports, by 2026, many female jobs are expected to be replaced by AI. Without proper training, women may struggle to find new employment opportunities. This issue has been highlighted by the World Economic Forum, which states that American women are more likely than men to lose their jobs to automation unless they undergo retraining. Only about half of them will manage to secure new positions in the coming years.
The report, compiled by the Boston Consulting Group using data from Burning Glass Technologies and the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, reveals that 57% of the 1.4 million jobs at risk of being replaced by new technologies in the U.S. are currently held by women. This trend is particularly concerning for low-paying jobs, which are often filled by women or individuals with lower levels of education.
With appropriate retraining, most workers can transition into better-paying roles. However, without such support, many will face difficulties in finding new jobs, especially women. The transition period is expected to be costly and challenging. Saadia Zahidi, one of the researchers and a leader in education at the World Economic Forum, emphasized that this is an unprecedented situation requiring strong policy action and corporate involvement.
As AI continues to evolve and become more intelligent, it is estimated that each industrial robot could replace six employees. Within five years, up to 30% of banking jobs might disappear. These changes highlight the urgent need for reskilling and upskilling programs to help workers adapt to the changing job market.
The World Economic Forum also warns that achieving gender equality in the workplace could take a century, which is nearly 20 years longer than previously predicted. Zahidi stressed that business leaders are beginning to recognize their role in closing this gap, but the challenge remains complex due to the need for new educational approaches and the financial burden of retraining.
Without retraining, a quarter of workers could see an annual income drop of $8,600, and many might not find new jobs. On the other hand, those who receive training could earn over $15,000 more annually within two years, with 95% securing new positions. Additionally, retrained women could see a 74% increase in wages, while men might experience a 53% rise, helping to narrow the gender pay gap.
The study outlines 15 different strategies for workers in fields like online services, truck driving, secretarial work, and cashier roles to transition into new careers. As AI reshapes the workforce, proactive measures and investments in education will be crucial to ensuring a fairer and more inclusive future.
