Korean scientist Ilhan Bae has long dreamed of merging drones with robots to develop a new kind of flying robot. After years of dedicated research and development, he finally brought his vision to life with the creation of RobotDroneMan. This unique machine can fly remotely like a drone, but it can also walk on the ground and use its arms to interact with people, making it highly versatile.
In terms of design, RobotDroneMan features a drone body with a flat platform and a mechanical arm on top, along with three wheels at the bottom. Standing at 0.9 meters tall and weighing 11 kilograms, it can move on the ground at a speed of up to 3 kilometers per hour. While its appearance may seem a bit unusual, the robot's main advantage lies in combining the strengths of both drones and robots. It can fly over obstacles or move on the ground, reducing the impact of terrain on its mobility.
Additionally, when the robot reaches a destination, the remote operator can use its video capabilities and two robotic arms to interact with the environment. This allows for remote communication and task handling, breaking down spatial barriers and enabling real-time interaction from a distance.
According to the researchers, the ultimate goal is to create a future where robots and drones are no longer separate entities but integrated systems. They hope to open up a new market for such adaptable robots, which can reach any customer who needs assistance. Unlike humanoid robots like Softbank’s Pepper, which are limited to indoor spaces and specific movements, RobotDroneMan offers greater flexibility and mobility.
